If you thought doing a course in Economics at Delhi University was only about easier access to that much sought after corporate sector job, perhaps a look at the third-year students of Economics at Shri Ram College of Commerce might give you a little perspective.

This year, the Economics department at SRCC organised a field trip to Daudpur, a village in Ludhiana district of Punjab. An impromptu discussion in class led to this field trip, which is one of its kind at the undergraduate level. A group of 24 students and faculty members made the journey, and the aim was to study the agrarian situation in Punjab.

Daljit Singh, a documentary filmmaker who deals with agricultural issues in his films, suggested Daudpur, which is how the field trip came about. The college is keen on making the field trip a regular feature depending on the interest shown by successive batches. These trips may not necessarily be to Daudpur, which is a relatively well-off village in comparison to those in other parts of the country.
