A GALAXY of prominent Urdu poets and writers read out their works in two separate sessions held in the auditorium of Bharat Bhavan on Friday.
Renowned poet Gulzar enchanted audience with his verses. He praised the Sahitya Akademi for holding such a literary event where poets and writers of both Hindi and Urdu were invited to recite. His nazm ‘Mein neeche chal kar rahta hoon’ entranced the audience.
Before reciting, the ‘nazms’, Gulzar paid an emotional homage to legendary Urdu writer Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi, who recently died in Pakistan.
He said that Qasmi, 90, was beyond geographical boundaries and recalled relationship with the late Urdu writer whom he called Baba. He read out a nazm in memory of the author.
Mehtab Naqvi received thunderous applause particularly his ghazal with the couplet ‘apni khaatir sitam ijaad bhi ham karte hain/aur phir naala-o-faryaad bhi ham karte hain’.
Pratapal Singh Betab’s ghazal with the couplet ‘ek tilismi chiragh hai dunia/hai to sab hai, nahin to kuchh bhi nahin’ struck chord with the audience. Betab hails from Jammu and Kashmir.
Jayant Parmar’s unique nazms like ‘Namaz’, ‘Husain ke Ghode’ received a hearty applause. Parmar is a well-known Urdu poet from Gujarat. Chandrabhan Khayal, Saifi Sironji and Jamal Owaisi also recited at the poetic meet.
Earlier in the morning session, eminent writers read out their stories. Ibn Kanwal’s story ‘Hamara Tumhara Khuda Badshah’ set the mood. Well-known writer Ghazanfar’s ‘Karwa Tel’ story enthralled the audience. Tarannum Riyaz read out her story ‘Kashti’ set in the backdrop of Kashmir. The story about racing thoughts of a woman as she waits for her turn at a PCO booth to talk to her husband charmed the listeners.
