The Indian tricolour will don the Manhattan landmark through Sunday night.
The Empire State Building will also mark Pakistan's Independence Day, which falls on Aug. 14, by illuminating the building tower with that country's flag colours of white and green from Aug 20 to 22.
Traditionally, the building first marks Pakistan's Independence Day before being illuminated with the Indian tricolour.
But this year, Pakistan Day will be marked during Aug 20-22, since the tower was lit blue and white on Aug 12 to salute the Olympic Games that opened Friday.
Once the tallest man-made structure in the world at a towering height of 1,454 feet, the Empire State Building celebrates important events round the year by lighting its tower in colours relevant to the particular occasion.
This annual lighting schedule is developed to honour national holidays, seasons, and the myriad ethnic groups living in the New York City area, of which South Asians are an important component.
