Engineer at Tata Motors site attacked

An engineer, working at the Tata Motors small car factory in Singur, was injured when unidentified persons pelted stones at his car.

An engineer, working at the Tata Motors small car factory in Singur, was injured when unidentified persons pelted stones at his car, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred last night at Ratanpur when M Khatua, an engineer of Shapoorji-Pallonji Ltd, entrusted with civil construction of the small car plant, was returning from the factory.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was given first-aid.

In a separate incident, some villagers who tried to enter the project site from nearby Khaserberi village on Tuesday but police resisted their move.

Meanwhile, crackers were recovered from outside the project site at Gopalnagar area on Monday, the police said.

Posters have also appeared under the banner of Krishi Jami Raksha Committee (Save Farmland Committee) in several areas of Singur asking "outsiders" to leave the area.

Several contract labourers, engineers and technical officers from outside the state have been involved in the project activities.

The police have been deployed in full strength in three railway stations -- Singur, Kamarkundu and Madhusudanpur -- where labourers disembark from trains to report for work at the Tata Motors factory.

Krishi Jami Raksha Committee convener Becharam Manna said: "We believe in democratic movement. We are not directly involved in any clash. We have just asked the outsiders to leave".
