If the United States is the favoured destination with Indian students for management courses, Germany is fast becoming popular for studies in engineering and chemistry.

Germany has witnessed a significant rise in the number of Indians pursuing higher studies there and majority of the students are going in for courses in engineering and chemistry, Ulrich Podewils, the director of German Academic Exchange Service in India, said.

“There has been a six to eight-fold rise in the inflow of Indian students to Germany during the last 10 years. More than 80 per cent of the students are pursuing courses in either engineering or chemistry” he said. During 1990-1998, the number of Indian students in Germany ranged between 600 and 1,000.

“In engineering, students are preferring new areas like nano-technology, bio-technology etc,” he said. Podewils said the opening of new job opportunities and increase in the number of courses in English are the major factors for the rise in the number of Indian students.

He said Indo-German trade is on the rise and German companies are looking to recruit Indian students. More than 6,000 Indo-German joint ventures have been started in recent years, he said.
