Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has expressed his desire to be remembered as the one who "saved Pakistan from bankruptcy".
Talking to Pakistan Television (PTV), he said the army rank and file supported him because he had been "physically with them" during times of adversity.
The president said the Supreme Court of Pakistan had given him three years (for holding both the offices of head of the state and army chief), and it was enough time to resolve all pending issues facing the country, the Daily Times newspaper reported.
In the interview, Musharraf also said he wanted to be remembered as the saviour of Pakistan, as a man who brought back his nation from imminent economic collapse.
Roundly blaming the previous governments, he said: "When I came to power in 1999, the country was on the verge of bankruptcy and I determined the direction it should take."
He referred to the country's mounting foreign debts, low income and abysmal forex reserves at the time of assuming responsibilities of government in 1999, saying he felt "disheartened" at the state of affairs.
Musharraf, who is also army chief, has had at least three known attempts on his life for which serving and retired personnel were detained and are facing trial. Some have been convicted.
