The topic for today’s essay competition was ‘How effective is the law against female feticides’. Around 50 students from the four houses namely Westcott, Chatterjee, Douglas and Slater took part in the competition and expressed their views on the topic.

Dr Ashutosh Saxena, convener, co-curricular programmes committee said the topic evoked intense reactions from the participants. The sex selective abortions serve as a new vehicle of India’s traditional anti-female bias. This underlines the general preference for boys in male dominated societies, he said It indeed augured well for the future of this country that the educated youth condemned the practice of female foeticide very vehemently and at the same time cautions that this legislation could become a toothless law unless implemented stringently.

Dr Saxena said reason behind selecting such topics concerning the present scenario was to provide a platform to students to gauge the views and opinions of the students on contemporary and burning issues.
