Estimated 50 per cent polling in Maharashtra

An estimated 50% of the 3.36 crore voters exercised their franchise in the second phase of Lok Sabha polls in 24 constituencies of Maharashtra which was by and large peaceful.

An estimated 50 per cent of the 3.36 crore voters on Monday exercised their franchise in the second phase of Lok Sabha polls in 24 constituencies of Maharashtra which was by and large peaceful except for stray incidents of violence at Talasari in nearby Thane district and Khed near Pune.

Polling, which came to a close at 5:PM, saw the end of a day-long eventful polling in the state where 202 candidates vied for the maximum votes in their respective constituencies.

Celebrities, including Sachin Tendulkar, actress Hema Malini, Esha Deol, actor Dev Anand, industrialists Mukesh and Anil Ambani, turned up at various polling booths to cast their ballots.

Strict security marked the polling process in the state with nearly 80,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces deployed in the state.

The constituencies that went to polls today, included six from Mumbai and remaining 18 from parts of north Maharashtra, Marathwada, entire Konkan and western Maharashtra regions.
