Blame it on the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, but green is definitely the new black. From swanky eco-friendly parties and ‘green’ carpets to eco fashion — green is the colour to flaunt.

Even Santa Claus sports green on Tokyo’s streets nowadays. On Australian website, Green Santa, this new avatar got over 3,000 more votes than his traditional red counterpart. Burger giant McDonald’s is the latest to jump the ‘green’ bandwagon. Swapping the traditional red backdrop on its logo for a deep green — to promote a more eco-friendly image — its franchises in the UK and France have started using the new colour scheme behind their Golden Arches already. One hundred German McDonald’s outlets will make the change later this month.

Meanwhile, inspired by US President Barack Obama’s green banquet for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, youngsters in Delhi are hosting eco-bashes too. “We threw an all-green birthday bash for a friend. On the menu was organic food and refreshing cocktails such as mojitos. The place was decked up with flowers and everyone wore green,” says Nishant Jaiswal, an advertising professional.

is musician Chris Cornell of rock act Audioslave. He tweets, “Today we celebrated my son's 4th birthday! He got a green bike and numerous other cool green things. He is the apple (green) of my eye!!!!"

Earlier last week, at the grand premiere of Big B’s Paa, star guests including Sir Ben Kingsley walked a “green carpet,” following the trend that started at the IIFA awards held in Macau.

Co-inciding with Copenhagen, a Mumbai-based group have started an initiative called Batti Bandh. The initiative, inspired by the Earth Hour, calls on all Mumbaikars to switch off their lights on December 12 between 7.30 to 8.30 pm. Keith Menon, who started Batti Bandh in 2007 says, “The amount of energy conserved by an hour of lights off during the campaign in 2007, was equivalent to putting 2.5 lakh cars off the roads forever.” Batti Bandh will travel to Delhi and Bangalore soon.
