The BJP has asked the UPA government to evolve a consensus to define the 'office of profit' issue with the basic principle being that nobody should be able to enjoy 'double benefit'.
The issue of office of profit had assumed "high importance because all forms of logical and illogical arguments were being made", senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said, adding that there was a need for a serious debate and a consensus should be evolved to define the office of profit.
The Congress had wanted to harass political opponents but it boomeranged on it, he said.
"We have to redefine the office of profit based on experience. The basic principle should be that nobody should be able to enjoy double benefit." On the Scorpene submarine deal with France, Naidu said a major "cover up operation is on", and demanded a "credible and impartial inquiry" into the "political kickbacks" and war room leaks.
"Foreigners and middlemen involved should also be arrested," he said. "Why is the government keeping quiet? Are they doing a cover up operation." On the two Bharat Suraksha Yatras, one by LK Advani and the other by party President Rajnath Singh, he said that the Centre informing the BJP about the security threat to the two leaders vindicated the party's position that the country itself faced security threat.
