Former Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Tejinder Khanna, known for his crackdown while in office on building and land law violations, is tipped to head the proposed high-powered committee on the Capital's illegal constructions.
The search for political representatives of the committee -- one each from the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP -- and for two or three experts is on, an Urban Development Ministry source said.
"The committee's terms and reference are being drafted. One of the key jobs of the proposed Central committee on building and land law violations in the capital will also involve suggesting tough action against the builder mafia blamed for proliferation of illegal structures across Delhi," the source said.
The decision to set up a special committee on Delhi's illegal buildings and land encroachments was taken on Tuesday at a meeting headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Khanna, Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor under the United Front government, had set up a special anti-demolition task force while in office.
The committee, expected before February 16, will be required to classify in detail building law violations in the Capital as major and minor and enlist encroachments, he said.
