A Gurgaon district court has convicted a former Haryana minister, Dharambir Yadav, of corruption and sentenced him to four years imprisonment on Monday. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Yadav.
District and additional judge Vimal Kumar retained the same verdict given in the year 2006. The former minister was arrested in 2002 by the state vigilance department on charges of corruption. However, he got bail and appealed to the high court. After the verdict on Monday, Yadav was arrested and sent to Bhondsi jail.
He was a member of the Haryana legislative assembly from May 1996 to December 1999. Yadav was a cabinet minister during the Bansi Lal government and allegedly purchased huge properties. He bought about 80 to 90 acres of land in his name and his relatives name. He had also purchased 14 acres of land in Salhawas village. He also owns 6 to 7 cars. Besides this he has 6 kanal 12 marlas of land, worth Rs 78,750 in Rewari district.
Yadav is currently lodged in Bhondsi jail. He has challenged against his conviction. According to defence lawyer Satyaveer Sharma, the conviction will be challenged in the high court. “We are disappointed with this verdict. The local court has ignored the high court instructions which were given to them when the case was transferred to Gurgaon in 2008,” said Sharma.
