The State Excise Department, for instance, had illegally occupied four shops in the IMC-owned Maharaja Complex. The annexation came to light only when a Revenue Committee team headed by Mayor-in-Council member Shankar Yadav undertook a tour of IMC-owned markets to gauge occupancy levels.

After learning of the illegal occupation an irate Yadav directed the Self-Finance Scheme to submit a reply on how the Excise Department came to annex the shops and why no action had been taken so far.

The MiC member also expressed displeasure at the lack of proper facilities in the basement parking and directed the market officer to take action against parking attendants found missing during the inspection.

Earlier, the Revenue Committee also toured Shivaji Vatika where a shopkeeper with large amounts in outstanding taxes immediately presented a cheque after the team threatened to seize his shop.

Crackdown on tax defaulters continues
AN IMC vigilance department team on Wednesday sealed the premises of Gwalior Oil Mill Industries at Sanwer Road for failing to pay Rs 1.67 lakh in outstanding dues. The Corporation also seized properties of eight large-scale defaulters including three in zone 11 whose unpaid dues were in excess of Rs 1 lakh.

A severe shortage of funds coupled with the State Government’s reluctance to provide cash transfusions has prompted the Corporation to step into recovery collection overdrive so that it has sufficient money to at least disburse salaries on time.

After initiating attachment proceedings against ten defaulters on Monday, the revenue team was hard at work again on Wednesday seizing the properties of Raghuvir Prasad (Rs 38,000) and Rukmini Bai (Rs 25,488) for defaulting on property tax payments.

Revenue Department also seized the houses of Sunbderlal Buddhachand and Narayan Gorelal in ward no 43 after the owners failed to pay Rs 20,000 and Rs 11,457 respectively.
