Experts favour new techniques for meeting challenges to Urdu

Experts ask the scholars, teachers and writers of the Urdu language to adopt new techniques and approaches, reports Faisul Yaseen.

Former HOD Urdu department at the Jawaharlal Nehru University Sharib Rudolvi on Monday asked the scholars, teachers and writers of the Urdu language to adopt new techniques and approaches for meeting the new challenges to the language.

He was delivering the presidential address at the inaugural function of the two day national seminar jointly organised by the department of Urdu, University of Jammu (JU) in collaboration with Centre for Professional studies in Urdu on 'Urdu language and literature in 21st century -- challenges and directions'.

Rudolvi lauded the efforts of Urdu department JU in popularising the language by floating new courses of study for the progress and development of Urdu and literature in consonance with the new age requirement.

He opined that Urdu language and literature had to move along with other subjects and make experiments necessary for fulfilling the new responsibilities thrown upon them by changing the scenario all over the world.

"The teachers have to revise the syllabi and courses of study, the writers have to provide written material for those courses and scholars and students have to delve deep into this material to gain expertise for creating niche for themselves," Rudolvi said.

Director Radio Kashmir T Angmoo regretted paucity of material on new subjects without which she said the growth of popularising and utility of the language was deplorably small.

Director Centre for Professional Studies in Urdu Shohab Innayat Malik criticised the state government for not having given its due to the Urdu language despite being the official language of the state. He said that this was becoming detrimental to the growth of the Urdu language and literature in the state.

Organising Committee members Zahir-ud-Din, Khursheed H Siddiqui and Nusrat Choudhary also expressed their views about the challenges Urdu was facing.
