Eminent doctors and surgeons from all over the country will gather at Allahabad to discuss the challenges in screening and treatment of oral cancer and form a 'step-by-step' strategy for the prevention of cancer at the 'National Update on Oral Pre-cancer and Cancer Challenges Ahead-2006' on February 5.
The conference, sponsored by Medical Council of India and Indian Council of Medical Research will be inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Allahabad University Dr M Rajan Harshe.
The conference will be addressed by oncologists, dental and ENT surgeons, senior academicians from national medical institutes and stalwarts in the field of cancer treatment like Dr Vinay Hazare, Dean, Government Dental College Nagpur.
Dr Hazare has done oral submucous fibrosis review of over one thousand cases with emphasis on prime etiologic agents.
He will speak on 'Surgicopathological correlation'
The other speakers include Dr PC Gupta, ex-director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai. He will speak on 'Epidemiology and Scenario in India'.
Dr Dinesh Daftari from TIFR will share his views on 'Prioritizing oral pre-cancer'.
The conference will also be addressed by Dr AK Dewan, senior surgeon at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, New Delhi and Dr Hari Parkash from New Delhi. Dr PC Gupta has been a pioneer in the epidemiology and spread of oral cancer.
From Mumbai Dr BK Mishra will share his views on 'Recent Advances in therapy of Oral Lesions/Risk Habits and Oral Cancer'.

{{/usCountry}}Additional Director Regional Cancer Centre Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital Allahabad Dr B Paul Thalliath, Dr Sandeep Singh, Dr Kamal Singh and senior professors from MLN Medical College will also participate in the conference.
Organizing secretary Dr Ravi Mehrotra said the whole idea of the conference is to acquaint the participants with the epidemiology, prevention, pathology, diagnosis and management of oral pre-cancer and cancer.
It will cover the emerging challenges and priorities in oral pre-cancer research.
A step-by-step strategy will also be formed for an early detection and cure of oral cancer, he said.
"Of the total cancer patients reported in the country 30-40 per cent were found suffering from oral cancer.
Moreover 60 per cent cases report in late stages, when only palliative care is possible. MLN Medical College alone reports over one thousand cancer patients every year.
The figure is much higher at Regional Cancer Centre," he added.
