DEPARTMENT OF Science and Technology (DST) has nominated director of Allahabad's Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) Dr MD Tiwari as the coordinator of the Indo-Canadian Inter-Governmental Science and Technology Programme inked between India and Canada recently.

Dr Tiwari will leave on a five-day official trip to Canada on September 10 where he will hold talks with his Canadian counterpart Prof Eric Tsang on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applications that can benefit both the nations.

Expressing happiness over the responsibility entrusted on him, Prof Tiwari said that he has identified three core areas for application of ICT solutions with a focus on improving the lives of the rural population.

"The first thrust area can be the providing of broadband connectivity for rural and remote areas including both the terrestrial and satellite communication system. The second solution can be the fast becoming popular Ubiquitous computing that incorporates intelligent systems with sensors while the third role for ICT can be in the field of disaster management from the point of view of communication infrastructure in consultation with coordinators of the Earth Sciences sector in the science and technology framework," Dr Tiwari said.

It is to be recalled that two national level seminars on the role of ICT were organised at IIIT-A's Amethi campus in April and August 2006 in which experts from all over the country had come up with innovative uses of ICT in improving the lives of the common man.

The coordinator of Communication Research Centre of Ottawa (Canada) Dr Veena Rawat too had visited India recently and held talks with Dr Tiwari in this
regard.
