JUST AHEAD of the world cricket championship, the City will have a cricket stadium of international standard to boast of. The Sports department is investing Rs 50 lakh to give a facelift to the Old Campion Grounds and the work is expected to be finished by the next financial year.
With five turf wickets, the Old Campion Grounds is one of the best venues for cricket in Bhopal. Scores of national and international players have lauded the turf wickets here. JP Yadav, the only international cricketer from the City, loves to play on the ground and considers it as the best for cricket.
The Sports department has chalked out a plan for stadium makeover. The playing field in the stadium will be 65 yards in the straight and 75 yards at the square boundary. The length and the breadth are almost of any international cricket ground. There will be tiers of RCC from all sides of the ground with capacity of 7000-8000 spectators.
A sufficient gap of 20 m is being provided between the tiers so that floodlights could be set up in future. Three structures will be constructed in which one will have a hostel and the other two for other uses.
Old Campion Grounds is the only available ground in New Bhopal having all prerequisites for an ideal stadium. Several cricket tournaments, including All India Manish Agnihotri and All India Mayank Chaturvedi are organised featuring national and international players.
