Great communicator that he is, Bill Clinton wants to present his wife, the redoubtable Hillary Clinton, in a kinder, gentler light. So he has told potential voters that he was so struck by Hill’s ability and intellect that when they were starting out, he suggested she dump him and follow her own political career. Now Hill, then in a woman-in-love avatar, chose her husband over running for any office. So off she trotted to the boondocks in Arkansas to marry Bill, who, by his own admission, did not have a sou in the till.
This little gem is to show that contrary to the swipes taken by political opponents, Hillary is not calculating at all; she is regular softy like you and me. For all this loyalty and sacrifice, how did our Bill pay her back when he was in the top post? By canoodling with the ghastly Monica Lewinsky, she of the third-degree gum disease. And when caught in Zippergate, Bill tried to wriggle out of it with the semantics of what sex actually amounted to. Through all this, Hillary stood firm as the Rocky Mountains by her man. Yet, for all his follies, it is Bill that people warm up to, not Hillary with her undoubted talents. We should feel for this smart, sassy woman who suffered public humiliation but not quite. Why? Because she gives the impression that she can take it on the jaw.
But let’s not hope Bill has not overdone the best combination of heart and mind bit. The American voter is a strange beast. While highly intelligent women are admired, they are also seen as a bit threatening. So it was that when Bill stood against Bush senior, the two wives had a cookie contest. Of course, here too Hill won but Barbara Bush walked away with public sympathy. So perhaps the Hill and Bill combo should tone it down a bit until the waters become a little clearer.
