With reference to the editorial Harm away from home (Our Take, September 11), the tragic stampede in a government-run school in East Delhi could have been prevented had the school authorities taken the trouble to provide a better plan for the safe evacuation of students in an emergency. Merely an announcement of compensation will do nothing to avert future mishaps of this kind. Young children deserve better infrastructure, like wider staircases, emergency exits and fire alarms in their schools, and it is the duty of the State to provide it.
