Shyam Nandan Jha, a resident of Darbhanga in Bihar, was suffering from high fever and was admitted to a private hospital a few days ago. The patient was diagnosed with dengue fever (haemorrhagic) with thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy with multi-organ failure. Though the patient died on Saturday, the death created scare in the Greenfield Colony area where Jha was living with his family.

Though the hospital authorities are tightlipped about the cause of the death, documents show that the patient was suffering from dengue fever and his platelet count had dropped to 5,000. This is probably the first dengue-related death in Faridabad this season.

“We have received the sample of this particular case from the private hospital,” Dr Romesh Chander, district malaria officer, said, adding, “we have sent it for investigation.”

He said 96 suspected dengue cases are currently under treatment at different hospitals of Faridabad — both private and government.

Hindi film director Yash Chopra’s dengue-related death in Mumbai has also created panic in the area with people from different colonies calling up heath officials for fogging. However, the government staff has been unable to cope with the demand.

“I have directed the civic agencies to ask their breeding checkers and field staff to climb on the top of the buildings, even if it’s difficult, to check mosquito breeding. Builders should also be challaned if mosquito breeding is found in the debris near construction sites,” said Walia.
