THE POLICE on Tuesday lobbed teargas shells to disperse irate farmers, who looted urea bags from a truck, which was transported to Kailaras from Morena in Jaura sub-division in Morena district.
After getting information that urea would be distributed to farmers, they gathered at the office of Jaura marketing society since morning. Apparently irked by the long wait, they blocked traffic at the Morena-Sabalgarh road. When the police arrived to clear the blockade, they indulged in the stone-pelting.
In the meantime, a truck carrying urea for Kailaras town passed by and farmers looted urea bags from it. Police lobbed tear gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Describing the situation as normal, Morena SP Hari Singh Yadav said police recovered urea bags, which were kept in nearby farms.
On Monday, urea arrived in Morena and farmers were informed that it would be distributed on Tuesday. However, urea did not reach Jaura till the afternoon. The urea crisis during the rabi season has created law and order problem in several parts. The crisis has triggered a war of words between the Government and Congress.
In November, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had requested the Centre to provide the State its required quota in view of the rabi season. The UPA leaders have been blaming the State Government for improper distribution, which they claim, triggered the crisis.

{{/usCountry}}Violent incidents, resulting in police firing were witnessed in Morena some two weeks ago over the urea shortage. Opposition parties —the Bharatiya Janashakti and the Congress — have been holding demonstrations to highlight the farmers’ woes.
The State, according to Chouhan, requires at least 2.5 lakh tonne by the year-end. Chouhan met Union Chemical and Fertiliser Minister Ram Vilas Paswan in New Delhi on Monday and demanded the State’s quota.
