An additional room constructed at the primary school at Kardawad village under Janpad panchayat Petlawad in Jhabua district is not being used by students. Instead, the room is used for storing farm equipment and other things by the villagers. The village is situated about 40 km north from the district headquarters.
Education department officials said they did not take over the room as they found several irregularities in construction work which was carried out by Kardawad village panchayat.
The state government has been laying emphasis on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (education for all) and the room was built at cost of Rs 2.57 lakh. The project was sanctioned in 2010-11 and the construction of one room took four years.
The project completed in September 2014. With no academic activities going on in the room, most of the farmers of the village started using it as a godown to store their equipment. As a result, the floor and walls of the room got damaged.
One of the farmers, Hemant Singh Rawat, (51), who uses the room to store his plough, said it was better to utilise the room for something as the children were not using it. Some of the villagers have started parking their heavy vehicles like tractors in the open space in front of the room.
"It is sheer wastage of government money," Santosh Singh Rathore, a villager from Kardawad village said. When contacted block resource coordinator Devesh Gaur said, "We refused to take possession of the room in September 2014 due to poor construction. During the inspection, the department found several irregularities in the construction work. The room has no electricity connection and the flooring is not up to the mark."
