People's Democratic Party (PDP) was making baseless charges against Omar and indulging in character assassination in a desperate attempt to keep its flock together in the state, he told reporters here in Western Maharashtra.

Omar has taken the state on development path, but the Opposition does not have any worthwhile issue so it is levelling frivolous charges against him, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

The 39-year-old Omar resigned on Tuesday after the PDP alleged his name figured in the 2006 sex scandal in Jammu and Kashmir. The Centre, however, said the National Conference leader's name is not on the CBI's list of accused.

Earlier, Farooq visited the famous Saibaba Temple and performed rituals. He was presented a Saibaba statue, shawl and a book on life of the revered saint by temple authorities.
