The Monica murder case was become a major issue of Nagpur and also figured prominently in the just concluded Assembly session. The state home minister, RR Patil had to assign the Inspector General of police (IGP), Rashmi Shukla to supervise the investigation.

Later, the cops were able to crack the case after Monica’s hostel inmates revealed clues to women sub-inspectors, who were deputed at the hostel.

The Nagpur police had already arrested six youths in this connection. The city police was shocked when it spilled the beans revealing it to be a case of “mistaken identity.” The mastermind, Kunal Jaiswal, a school teacher of neighbouring Katol city was rounded up soon after.

Monica Kirnapure, a third-year electronics student of Rajashree Mulak Engineering College, lived in the Pratibhatai Pawar Women’s hostel at Nandanwan in east Nagpur locality. She was on her way to the college when two unidentified youths, who were apparently following her, stabbed her from behind and fled.
