Fast track deal
Jyotiraditya Scindia’s views in N-powering India (September 12) bring out the strategic relevance of the 123 deal if India is to fast emerge as a superpower. The 123 deal is an important step towards reliable and legitimate access to nuclear technology and nuclear fuel. From an economic perspective, it will fuel the growth of India’s development plans. India gains in status as an important partner in the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The deal will strengthen strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington.

Government’s ego
With reference to the report Premature end to Parliament session (September 11), the government was in a position to contain the situation, but ego and arrogance came in the way. The UPA-Left panel on the nuclear deal appears to be a family affair. Bypassing the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha on an issue of national importance is a mistake. Had the government constituted a JPC, it would have enhanced the stature of the PM and the government.

Against the grain
MS Swaminathan in Not a grain to spare (September 7) rightly mentions the relation between food sovereignty and national sovereignty. It points to better mobilisation of available resources and caring for the soil and its tillers. Instead of buying better quality low-price wheat from our own farmers, the government buys poor quality stuff at high prices from elsewhere. Our farmers had enough wheat to sell but we lack a market intelligence system.

Sinister motive
With reference to the editorial The Presidential pocket (September 6), the decision to increase the salary of the President is a sinister design by politicians and bureaucrats to increase their salary and other allowances, once the President’s salary is increased. Let us hope the chairman of the Sixth Pay Commission will protect the taxpayer’s money and not distribute it as largesse.
