With reference to the editorial Mahatma vs Gandhi (October 2), the film Lage Raho Munnabhai has used Gandhi’s message of peace and love in an interesting manner. Its importance stems out of the fact that his principle of non-violence is fast fading. Sadly, the date of Gandhi’s assassination has been given as 1949. Even a child knows he was shot by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

Gandhi’s speech was usually brief, but meaningful. In London, when some journalists asked him about his choice of clothing, the loin cloth, he replied: “The fashion here is plus-four, but I prefer minus-four.” Another time, in his ashram, a foreigner found him besmeared in mud. On being asked the meaning of it, Gandhi replied, “I am wearing the crown of earth.”

The gandhigiri in Lage Raho Munnabhai may seem strange, but it is valuable in order to cope up with today’s fast-changing world. The feel-good face of the Mahatma in Munnabhai has done lots to popularise Gandhism.

No mercy
APROPOS OF the report Parties raise pitch for Afzal review (September 30), the PDP and other political parties are forgetting the fact that nine security personnel laid down their lives while battling terrorists in Parliament House. No mercy should be shown to Afzal Guru for his heinous and unpatriotic crime.

It is surprising that the J&K Chief Minister has pleaded in favour of Afzal. This will send out a wrong signal to perpetrators of similar acts against the nation. If we show any mercy to Afzal now, terrorists will only get emboldened to kill more innocent people.
