Dredging machines are working off the Shanti Nagar slums to clear the river of silt. Near CST Road in Kalina, the rubbish accumulates in heaps. A 19 km retaining wall to check the Mithi’s wrath and encroachments is being built: only 8 km has been completed.

The river has been walled at Morari Nagar, Filterpada, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, Bamandapada, Ashok Nagar, Marwaha industrial estate, Saki Naka, the airport area and Kranti Nagar, in the first phase. Other areas are being widened to increase the holding pond. But for residents, night vigils are common when the tide is high and rain heavy. This year will be no different.
