Interestingly, around 190 out of the 426 engineering colleges have found no takers for IT courses. Further, only around 3,450 seats for IT have been filled up, out of the total of 15,000 plus available seats in the first phase of the admissions, counselling for which ends on Wednesday, sources said.

Sources attributed the reversal in trend to the global economic meltdown, with students apprehensive about taking up the course.

Only 6212 seats of the total 21,397 seats in the Computer Science stream have found takers at the fag end of counselling for engineering admissions, Anna University statistics reveal.

IT companies going slow on campus recruitment have also forced students to look for greener pastures such as civil engineering, electronics and communication engineering and bio-technology among others, sources added.
