A devastating fire swept through the ground floor of the leading daily 'The Statesman' on Friday night, necessitating 20 fire tenders which took over two hours to control the blaze, Fire Brigade sources said.
There was however, no casualty in the fire which originated from the rotary room in the ground flood stacked with newsprint and finished papers, sources said.
The fire was first noticed at around 8.25 pm and was brought under control about two hours later, with over 150 firemen engaged in the task.
The entire building was evacuated immediately and employees shifted to safer areas.
A large posse of policemen cordoned off the entire area to facilitate smooth fire-fighting operations.
Sources said though the situation was under control, they were trying to put out smouldering fire in the ground floor.
West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, new CPI (M) state Secretary Biman Bose and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee visited the area.
