MINISTER OF State for Higher Education, Ramasrey Vishwakarma, today ordered strict action against fake universities and degree colleges, and directed the officials of his department to lodge FIRs against such institutions which were fooling and looting thousands of students. Managers of such institutions and others behind the fraud must be sent to jail, he added.
Addressing senior officers of the Higher Education department and registrars of the State universities here on Friday, Vishwakarma expressed serious concern over increasing number of fake universities and colleges which were awarding degrees not recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council of Technical Education (AICET). Such institutions were playing with the future of innocent and gullible students and the government could not be a mute spectator of the ongoing fraud, he observed.
He directed the officials to ensure that no students was denied admission and announced that the government had decided to increase 25 per cent seats in undergraduate classes in the universities and degree colleges to cope with the record number of students who passed intermediate examination. In addition to this, evening classes in the universities as well as in government and private degree colleges had also been permitted, he said, adding that additional staff of teachers should be recruited, if so needed, but no compromise should be made with quality.
The minister warned teachers of strict action if they did not discharge their duties devotedly and directed the vice-chancellors of the State universities to appoint nodal officers to regulate admissions and to maintain higher standards in degree colleges affiliated to them.

{{/usCountry}}Rajiv Kumar, principal secretary, Higher Education, who also addressed the officers, said that 187 new centers of the Rajshri Pursottam Das Tandon Open University had also been opened in the State to cope with a record number of intermediate pass outs. He assured that the government would do everything possible to ensure that every student got admission.
