CREATING A sort of medical history here, a 27-year-old woman from Qaziq Camp gave birth to quintuplets this afternoon at the New Apex Hospital at Karod Square.

However, the event is steeped in tragedy, as the childbirth was very premature leading to death of two of the five infants. The other three also might not survive overnight.

Four out of the five infants born were male while one was female. Two males succumbed in the evening while the doctors at the hospital were desperately trying to save the other three. The attending gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Nishat Khan however said that there are almost no hopes of the survival of even these three kids.

Dr Khan told Hindustan Times that the woman had some primary infertility problem and was undergoing treatment with her. When her first daughter passed away the lady again sought medical intervention and conceived naturally about six months ago.

During the sonography test conducted last month, the doctor was shocked to see multiple pregnancy and counted four foetuses. “We started taking extra care of her and were very worried about the childbirth,” Dr Khan said. This morning, the mother presented herself to Dr Khan with severe pains and checkup revealed totally dilated cervix that is basic sign of readiness for childbirth.

Two of the children were born normally but caesarian section had to be done for the other three. The low birth weight as well as underdeveloped organs gave indications to the doctors of the poor chance of their survival.
