In a bid to take drastic steps towards democracy, the King appointed five 'drangpons' or judges to the High Court on January 24, leading Bhutanese daily Kuensel reported.
The appointment came on the recommendations of country's National Judicial Commission.
National Assembly Secretary, Jigme Zangpo, Thimphu Dzongda Dasho Sherub Gyeltshen, Surveyor General Sithar Namgyal, drangpon Kinley Tshering and drangpon Tshering Wangchuk of Samdrup Jongkhar district court will join the four existing drangpons of the High Court, Kuensel reported.
Appointments were made keeping in mind the provisions in Bhutan's draft Constitution, which states that the judiciary should uphold and administer justice fairly and independently without fear, favour, or undue delay in accordance with the Rule of Law.
