Flash floods affect Leh villages, no casualties reported

Heavy rains in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir caused flash floods, resulting in damage to several residential houses, police said on Monday.

Heavy rains in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir caused flash floods, resulting in damage to several residential houses, police said on Monday.

"Flash floods caused by heavy rainfall affected four villages in Leh district late Sunday night," a police official said.

The worst-hit villages are: Vanilla, Shakti, Chuchut, Basigo, Thicksey, Saboo, Phyang, Shey.

"Several houses have been damaged due to the flash floods but no human casualties have been reported so far," the police official added.

Leh district recorded a rainfall of 10.4 mm during the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Monday.

Gushing water seeped into the Leh airport during the wee hours of Monday.

"The runway has been cleared and rescue teams have been sent to affected areas. Flights are operating as per the schedule," an official said.
