They made news last year and make an appearance this autumn-winter again. A few fashion designers share how leggings ‘fall’ under practical dressing and why you should be seen in them.
It’s ‘it’
Internationally, designers like Zac Posen, Alexander McQueen, Dolce and Gabbana and many others have presented leggings in their fall-winter collections. “It’s an important accessory for women who want to wear dresses and look fashionable in cold weather,” says designer Ranna Gill.
The fabric
From stretch wool to all-purpose lycra, the fabric chosen to make leggings differs from one designer to another. For instance, if Fendi showcased legwarmers in leather, designer Manish Gupta prefers sheer fabric and cotton lycra blends for his products.
Colour Splash
Charcoal gray and black colours were a favourite with Giorgio Armani. But Taandon predicts animal beige, brown and coffee hues. Gill suggests a varied palette of dark purple, dark charcoal, dark gray, deep emerald green.
The designs
Animal prints, gathers on one side, checks, small prints, geometric, abstract or pixilated prints — there’s a lot to choose from. Designer Alexander McQueen had his models wearing vertical stripes.
Team them with
According to Gupta, a legging can be worn with shift dresses, quilted jackets/dresses, pleated tunics. “Leggings go well with all dresses, only if they’re well coordinated. One should be careful while teaming up the two,” says Gill. Designer Diane Von Furstenberg paired them with minis, checked knee-length and hip-length coats.
