The Kheda district administration in Gujarat on Wednesday managed to pull to safety all the 135 schoolchildren and their teachers stranded in a hostel building in Bhalada village of Matar taluka.

Army boats were deployed to rescue the children marooned for the last four days. District Collector R R Varsani told HT that all the students are safe and are undergoing medical checks.

Rescue operations were ruled out on Tuesday as the students had enough to eat in the building and the flood water was not above the danger mark. The rescue operation was taken up this morning after the three feet water since last night receded.

Along with boats some jawans of the State Reserve Police also carried some children on their shoulders through the knee-deep water.

Meanwhile, Sardar Sarovar, one of the biggest dams in the country, started overflowing and over 55,000 people staying along the banks of Narmada have been evacuated.
