Flood situation on Tuesday aggravated in Assam with water level of Brahmaputra rising further following heavy rains, submerging 10 districts and affecting over four lakh people, even as the situation eased in adjoining Tripura where two children were washed away.
Heavy rains in Assam and foothills of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh led to further swelling of Brahmaputra and its tributaries which innundated large areas displacing people and forcing them to take shelter in high lands, roads and relief centres.
The Kaziranga National Park, home of the one-horned Indian rhino, was also flooded with the animals taking shelter on high platforms constructed within the sanctuary and other natural highlands.
Worst-hit Dhemaji district of the state remained cut-off from the rest of the state with flood waters washing away the national highway and railway tracks.
The situation deteriorated in Sonitpur district while high speed rivers eroded human habitations at Gorisinga, Tengabasti, Tengakhuti and Bihiagaon threatening two high schools and a Madarasa.
Bodies of two children, washed away in the floods, were found in worst-hit South Tripura district, which recorded highest rainfall in the last 20 years in the past five days, taking the flood toll in Tripura to four.
However, the situation in the state improved with water level of Fenni and Muur rivers receding, after rains stopped yesterday, and people started returning home from relief camps in Sabroom, Amarpur and Bilonia sub-divisions of the district.
