Rivers Ghaghra and Yamuna continued to play havoc in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, inundating large areas in various districts.
Two people drowned in Yamuna in Agra while Ghaghra flooded Panchampurwa village in Bahraich district. Around 50 houses were swept away by the river and around 250 villagers had to take shelter on the Rewali-Adampur embankment.
In Bahraich district, Khasepur, Jumarpur, Bahrampur and Mohammadpur were flooded by the Ghaghra. Paddy and sugarcane fields were submerged in the floodwater.
In Agra, 18-year old Shyam Nandan from Kailash village was swept away by the fast-flowing river.
In Bawli, 32-year old Ramesh from Nagla Devjeet village drowned. In Mathura, a woman identified as Chandrawati (30) drowned in the Yamuna.
Officials in Agra said over 38,000 people in low low-lying areas near the Yamuna have been affected due to the rising waters.
The water level of Yamuna rose to 499.4 ft on Sunday afternoon from 498.6 ft on Saturday night.
Villages such as Tanaura, Noorpur, Samogara, Mehra Naharganj, Manoharpur, Bahadurpur, Nagla Talfi, Sikandarpur and Kailash were inundated.
The central flood control cell said the Ganga was flowing above the danger mark in Farrukhabad and Ramganga in Shahjhanpur; Yamuna in Muzaffarnagar; and Ghaghra in Barabanki.
