The construction of flyovers would no longer be a simple affair — an elevated stretch over a busy road or intersection. The Delhi government has decided that all flyovers to be constructed from now on would have clover leaves or underpasses with facility for the pedestrians to cross the road wherever feasible.
The government has learnt its lesson from flyovers like the one at AIIMS crossing and Dhaula Kuan where there is no provision for the pedestrians to cross the road. In some of the flyovers like Noida crossing, clover leaves were added after the construction. The construction of multi purpose flyovers at Mukerba Chowk and Azadpur too have several tiers and provisions for the pedestrians.
Clearing a proposal of the Public Works Department (PWD) for the construction of a flyover at Jwala Heri — Bhera Enclave intersection on Outer Ring Road, Delhi Urban Development and Finance Minister AK Walia said the road would become signal free and people would get new facilities.
The new flyover would be constructed in 30 months and it would cost Rs 54.66 crores. An underpass and two foot over bridges too would be constructed at the site to provide a multi pronged solution to the traffic woes of the residents in and around the intersection. It will be constructed before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Walia said: "The flyovers in the city would serve commuters of all hues — whether on foot or on two-wheelers or cars. Wherever possible, there would be multiple arms so that traffic moving from all directions gets a signal free intersection."

{{/usCountry}}At present, there are 40 proposals of flyovers pending with different authorities. After clearing a proposal, Delhi government sends it to the technical committee of the DDA. Following the technical committee's clearance, the proposal is sent to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission. After all these mandatory clearances, the file comes back to the state government for commencement of the construction work.
