Earlier in the news for his controversial "Sri Lanka is for Sinhalese" comments that drew flak from political parties in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lankan Army General Sarath Fonseka has again come in for severe criticism following his "political jokers" statement against some state politicians.
After Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Fonseka has come under fire from many a political party "struggling for the Sri Lankan Tamils' cause" and party workers have gone to the extent of burning effigies of the General for terming MDMK chief Vaiko and Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran as "political jokers".
At the receiving end was Vaiko, a vocal supporter of the banned LTTE, who had shot off an angry letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, asking him to demand "unconditional apology" from Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Vaiko has described as an "unprecedented humiliation" to India, the comments of an army general about politicians in a foreign land.
Political parties, including the MDMK, PMK and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a constituent of the DMK-led DPA and another open supporter of the rebel Tigers, burnt effigies of Fonseka in various parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Puducherry over the past few days.
On Wednesday, more than 100 MDMK workers courted arrest while staging a black flag demonstration outside the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai, protesting the General's comments about their founder.
