My decision to run the Mumbai Marathon last month was an emotional one and not a well-thought out one. I felt a sense of achievement even while registering for it. I was running for an NGO, Child Line, which works for underprivileged children. The presentation made by the NGO volunteers on the plight of street children in our country was too touching for me to turn down the request. I knew I had to do my bit to support their cause.

I raised pledges. Contributions came in and within a few days, I had raised a good amount. I finished my run and collected my certificate proudly. I felt good that I had done something for these kids.

The other day, I was heading home after work. I stopped by a fast food joint to pick up a sandwich. I had barely stepped out when a hungry street kid came to me with her hand stretched out. It was so ironical. I had just run the marathon for these kids. I wondered if my endeavour had really benefited them or was it just an eyewash?
