In his article Pin the babus (February 20), Pankaj Vohra has rightly suggested that there should be valuation of properties of powerful functionaries in the civic agencies, politicians and bureaucrats to ascertain if they are holding assets beyond their income.

Why exclude the police from this exercise? After all, the three pillars of society are in connivance to rob the average citizen.

Make peace, not war

Sagarika Ghose’s article Rang de Bizarre (February 21) emphasises that we are drifted away from reality and a group of youngsters murdering the defence minister for his corrupt services is certainly not the solution. The point that I would like to make here is that the murder was the highest expression of fury for the killing of innocent lives. Other remedial ways were also mentioned in the movie — that the youth join politics, the administrative or police services to force change. The reason Rang de Basanti appeals so much to the youth is that it reminds them of their innate strength.

Sagarika Ghose is right that the film portrays hatred more than patriotism. Film star like Aamir Khan’s calibre should be careful of the repercussions of such movies especially as he wields so much influence on young people.

Shame on Delhi

The law-abiding citizens of India, especially in Delhi, should be ashamed and anguished that the city allows the rich and powerful to murder in full view of scores of influential people (Justice reanimated, Feb. 25). Where is our conscience? Where is the courage to tell the truth? This case spells the death of humanity in Delhi’s civic life. The hollowness of celebrities’ shedding tears over animal rights is deep when they can’t stand up for one of their own.

Landing in trouble

This refers to the report DDA not keen on Reddy’s housing policy proposal (February 24). It will be unfair if DDA flats are auctioned instead of allotted, as suggested by Jaipal Reddy. He will then be helping the builder mafia, depriving the common man of his only chance to acquire a house.
