Foreign ‘clients’ may be prosecuted

The foreign nationals and NRIs who are presently in Gurgaon and were to undergo kidney transplant at Dr Amit Kumar’s Sector-23 medical centre may have to face prosecution, reports Sanjeev K Ahuja.

The foreign nationals and NRIs who are presently in Gurgaon and were to undergo kidney transplant at Dr Amit Kumar’s Sector-23 medical centre may have to face prosecution. They had come to India on tourist visas instead of medical visas, said Gurgaon police commissioner Mohinder Lal said. These visitors could also be implicated if they have already made the payments, Lal said.

The two Indian nationals from Ghaziabad and Patel Nagar (Delhi) –– who have already undergone ‘successful’ kidney transplant operations at the Sector 23 centre on January 23/24 –– could also face charges.

The police have also identified two NRIs and four Greek nationals who were staying at the D 5/29 DLF City apartment, which Dr Kumar allegedly had converted into a guesthouse for his patients. One NRI and three of the Greeks are women. “These people came to India specifically for medical treatment, not for leisure. The information regarding their stay and purpose of stay in the concerned police station was for leisure, not for medical treatment,” the commissioner said.

Lal said his officers were in touch with the Greek Embassy. The Embassy has sent counsellors to meet the visitors and mediate with the police. Sources revealed the police have seized the passports of the visitors.

One of the Greek women, Penagoria Gorgia, whose photograph with Dr Amit Kumar was found in the Sector 23 house, is suspected to be an agent. She is under the police scanner, the police said.

Commissioner Lal said Sonam Joy (52), an NRI from the USA, Leonida Dayasi (56) and Leonidas Dayiasis (63) –– both Greek –– were all staying in the DLF guesthouse, but they claimed they were only accompanying the other visitors.
