The forest department has asked the Rapid Metro Gurgaon Limited (RMGL) to plant 1,000 new trees to compensate the loss of 90 trees which could not to survive after transplantation.
The trees were uprooted and replanted elsewhere in October last to make way for the proposed transport route in the city.
At least eight new trees will be planted in Caterpuri cow shelter to compensate each tree which died due to lack of expertise while replanting, according to the forest department.
“It is very rare that a plant survives transplantation when done without the supervision of the forest department. Now we have ordered RMGL to plant eight plants for each plant which amounts to almost 1000,” range officer Devinder Rao said.
An RMGL official said: “We have learnt from our mistakes and now have hired a new agency for the job. We will now supervise the plantation and make sure that the plants are taken care of in the cow shelter.”
Many plants will be brought in from Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand and other places. Some rare trees like kalpvriksh will also be planted in the four acre of land in the shelter, besides ornamental and medicinal plants.
