The forest department has started taking steps to contain nefarious activities of monkeys that have become a big problem in various parts of the state and especially in districts of Hamirpur, Una and Dehra area of Kangra.
The department had recently organised a day-long workshop to finalise a foolproof strategy in this respect under the chairmanship of Dr Lalit Mohan, additional chief conservators of forests (wildlife). Senior forest officers of the districts of Hamirpur, Una and Dehra subdivision of Kangra took part in the meeting and presented their reports.
Pradeep Thakur, conservator of forest, Hamirpur, on Monday said the meeting took strong exception to the growing nefarious activities of the simians and appealed to the people not to throw any food nearby temples and roadsides. He said the meeting was of the view that since it was a major problem being faced by all, all should take effective steps to contain it and to save them from the wrath of simians.
Thakur said there were 42,562 monkeys in the Hamirpur forest circle consisting of Hamirpur, Una and Dehra of Kangra. Out of the total, 13,473 had been sterilised and sent to the places from where they were captured.

{{/usCountry}}He said the department had decided to set up one more monkey sterilisation centre at Ishpur in Una district in order to contain the population of monkeys. At present, there were two sterilisation centres in the Hamirpur forest circle at Shashtar in Hamirpur and Bowl in Una districts.
The forest officer said the meeting decided to approach the people through panchayati raj institutions and other NGOs to capture the monkeys for getting them sterilised.
