STATE FOREST Department is planning to undertake the prestigious wetland management project of Alvara lake in Manjhanpur tehsil in Kaushambi district.
The eco development project of the Alvara lake which is of 325 hectares (800 acres) and is famous for indigenous as well migratory birds will be carried out by raising the embankment of the lake and planting bird-friendly trees like of ficus variety which have thick branches.
The weeds (water hyacyntha) harmful for water birds will also be removed from the lake. A team of experts recently visited the site to conduct feasibility study and found the place fit for eco tourism, said chief conservator of forest Ashwini Kumar.
Kumar said the project is still under consideration of Government of India. Once project is sanctioned and the funds are allocated the work will start from April 2006. He said the wetland areas are mostly big ponds and lakes where water stagnates for more than nine months in a year. These places hold importance from nature's point of view as it helps in recharging the fast depleting ground water, he said.
