The Maoists triggered a landmine as the escort jeep of Singh, a RJD candidate, passed and then opened fire, Garwah Deputy Commissioner Vijay Kumar Singh told newsmen here.

Two policemen and the driver were wounded in the firing, he said. A woman villager was also injured.

However, Singh, who was in a car behind the targetted vehicle escaped unhurt, Singh said."The injured are being airlifted to hospital," he said.

Singh, who is contesting from Garwah assembly seat, was returning from an election meeting addressed by RJD chief Lalu Prasad.

Garwah is among the 16 Maoist-hit constituencies where assembly elections in the last phase will be held on Friday.
