Vajpayee (84), who was running fever for the last couple of days, was brought to the AIIMS at 10.00 PM. Vajpayee was also taken to the Intensive Care Unit(ICU), DK Sharma, Superintendent of AIIMS said.

Sharma said Vajpayee was suffering from chest infection but his condition is stable. The Hospital will be conducting further tests.

BJP leader Vijay Goel said doctors did not think that Vajpayee's condition is serious. Dr Randeep Guleria, Vajpayee's personal physician, was conducting echo-respiratory tests on the former premier.

BJP president Rajnath Singh rushed to the hospital on hearing news of Vajpayee being admitted. Party leader Vijay Goel said Vajpayee had apparently developed chest congestion after a bout of cough.

He said doctors will take a decision on Wednesday whether he should be at AIIMS for some days or be at home. Goel said a decision to rush Vajpayee to AIIMS hospital was taken at about 9.30 pm.

BJP leader LK Advani, a close associate of Vajpayee for several decades, spoke to the former premier's family members from Bangalore and inquired about his condition.

Owing to ill health, Vajpayee has been making fewer public appearances in the last couple of years.
