“His condition has deteriorated since Friday morning, so we have put him on mechanical ventillatory support for assistance in breathing. His basic functions, however, are normal. He is being closely monitored by our experts,” said AIIMS medical superintendent Dr D.K. Sharma.

Vajpayee was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) late in the night on February 3 after he complained of severe chest pain. He had lower respiratory tract infection, which was causing the fever and pain.

“The very fact that he is in the ICU indicates that his condition needs to be closely monitored,” said one of the doctors treating him. The doctor did not want to be quoted because he is not authorised to speak.

The team of doctors at AIIMS that is looking after the former prime minister comprises Department of Medicine professor Dr Randeep Guleria, Cardio-thoracic and Vascular Surgery chief Dr A. Sampath Kumar, Department of Cardiology head Dr V. K. Behl, Department of Neurology professor Dr M.V. Padma Srivastava and Department of Medicine associate professor Dr Naveet Wig.
