America has virtually accused Pakistan of being the headquarters of Al-Qaeda. Pakistan will, of course, deny this. If the US believes Pakistan’s denial, then it must be living in a fools’ paradise. America, instead of merely making statements and counter-statements, should act. Pakistan will never admit to being the headquarters of al-Qaeda. In fact, Pakistan is the nerve centre of Islamic terrorism in the world. Is America listening?

Dhaka’s lost chance
Apropos of the editorial Bangladesh on boil (January 13), it was the late Indira Gandhi and brave Indian soldiers who liberated East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, from Pakistan’s dictatorial rulers in 1971. It’s nearly 36 years and the political class in Bangladesh has squandered away a golden opportunity to rule on their own. The result, poor Bangladeshis either continue to live in poverty or enter India through illegal routes as refugees.

The report Plan to turn city into concrete jungle (January 12), Delhi is already ruined beyond repair. There is encroachment, traffic jams, shortage of water and electricity. By allowing commercialisation of residential areas, these shortages will increase. The courts should not yield to political pressure as the capital has become one of the dirtiest cities.

A landmark step
The editorial Stay out, dammed spots (January 11), first Parliament and then the judiciary has taken a landmark step on the increase of corruption in the legislature. The decision to uphold Parliament’s decision to expel MPs is welcomed as they are elected to solve our problems and not to take money in return for asking questions in Parliament.
