MORE THAN 15 family planning operations have failed in the village Bannad of Sagar block in the last 21 years and 22 unwanted children have born. But the women are too poor to file litigation. Worse, doctors often pressurise women for the abortions to get rid of the unwanted children. Bannad is 15 km from the district headquarters on Sagar-Rehli road.
All the family planning operations were conducted in Dhana public health centre. The first case — that of Malti Dhaanak — failed in the year 1985. Then in 1989, Mithleshsh’s operation failed. In the same year, the operation of Azad Rani also failed. Since then, one or two cases fail every year. Most of the villagers are daily wages earners.
Some are marginal farmers. One woman who underwent an operation alleged that she had aborted twice since operation and was pregnant again. Her husband alleged that the doctors posted in Dhana PHC were pressurising his wife for abortion.
That is not all. Some women, whose operations failed, are facing serious health problems. One is afflicted with uterus cancer after the operation. Another faced continuous bleeding and is now in a precarious condition. Another woman’s
stitches turned septic.
A resident of the village, lawyer Brij Bihari Tiwari, said these villagers did not have money to file litigation in court. He said he would write to the National Human Rights Commission, National Women’s Commission and other organisations seeking monetary and moral support for the victims.
